November 2013 ....

Beside the lake, beneath the trees ….

Beside the lake

Welcome Judith! The Rev. Judith Evans was inducted as vicar of St Alban’s Church, Eastfield, on 30th November. The Friends of Eastfield Park welcome Judy into the area and trust that she will have a fruitful and rewarding ministry here. We hope to see you in the Park sometime, Judith!

Congratulations Lakeview! The plan-ning application to change Lakeview House from a Care Home into 28 residential flats was refused by Northampton Borough Council Planning Committee on 26th November. Our congratulations go to the Lakeview Residents Association and others who fought hard against this application.

During October and November, the FoEP planted well over 300 daffodil bulbs in Eastfield Park. The bulbs were planted beneath the trees on the northern side of the lake, under trees to the south and south-east of the top pond and in the first part of the tail of the ‘Eastfield Monster’. By the time the last bulbs were put in some of them had unfortunately started to deteriorate. Also, planting conditions at some of the sites were not ideal. Nevertheless, we hope for a good show in the spring of 2014 and an even better one in subsequent years. We may not be able to manage ‘ten thousand at a glance’ but we do hope to achieve an impressive show in due course. (Click this rectangle to see map showing areas planted: )

East Midlands in Bloom: One of the themes for the 2014 East Midlands in Bloom is the centenary of the outbreak of World War I and the Friends are beginning to consider how we might mark this significant anniversary. Should we create a large bed of poppies somewhere within the Park? Poppies grow best in disturbed soil so it would mean digging up part of the Park to achieve this. What do you think? Other work carried out in November included repairing the dead hedges around the culvert carrying the stream flowing into the top pond and cleaning the nearby steps leading away from the pond. We also cleared some of the vegetation in front of the pond and removed another five bags of litter. Most of this work was carried out by Vic Smith, Chair of the FoEP, and Park Ranger, Jason Toyne. Much more could have been achieved by a larger group of volunteers.
